Syria humanitarian crisis: 16 million people in urgent need
People in Syria need life-saving support right now. The recent unrest has left 300 people dead and one million displaced. This winter, with temperatures dropping and 90% of the population already facing poverty, many people are going without proper shelter to keep them safe.
The full picture of Syria’s future is yet to emerge. But we do know that people there have suffered severe trauma for years and are incredibly vulnerable this winter.
The best way to support people in Syria is to donate to our Syria Crisis Appeal.
If you can, please donate now.
At this moment, the British Red Cross is supporting the Syrian Arab Red Crescent to get help where it’s most needed. By giving today, you’ll fund vital support such as emergency medical treatment, food, basic supplies and clean water – aid that makes a difference in the hardest of moments.
How has 13 years of crisis affected people in Syria?
For 13 years, Syria has faced a devastating humanitarian crisis, with millions of people struggling to access food, water, shelter, healthcare and education.
The ongoing conflict, catastrophic earthquake in 2023, and now political uncertainty, has left communities scarred, lives uprooted, and critical infrastructure reduced to rubble.
Your donation will provide crucial support to people in Syria who are battling immense challenges. Even before the earthquake, hundreds of thousands of people had no place to call home. Many people have been forced into poverty, struggling to make ends meet amid economic collapse and a landscape of destruction.

What is the Red Cross and Red Crescent doing to help people in Syria?
The Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) has been at the forefront of the humanitarian response in Syria for the past 13 years. Their local teams, based in communities across the country, are able to respond quickly and help ease suffering wherever they can – providing basic needs like food, water and healthcare.
The British Red Cross has a long-standing partnership with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent. Together, we have been supporting people in Syria for over a decade – helping people and families get through their hardest moments.
In 2023 alone, through our regular and emergency programmes, we've made a huge difference to the lives of around 100,000 people. This includes:
- Supporting over 10,000 people with cash assistance affected by the 2023 earthquakes, so their immediate needs could be met.
- Providing over 12,000 households with essential aid to support the basic needs of vulnerable families living in freezing temperatures or inadequate shelter during the winter season.
- Helping 400 households to restart income-generating activities - such as starting businesses to help rebuild their livelihoods.
- Reaching over 1,000 households with cash support for education - empowering more than 5,000 women and children.
Providing this kind of vital aid not only helps ease immediate suffering but also lays the groundwork for the future. Throughout 2024, we continued to help people in Syria – with meaningful support made possible by the generosity of our supporters.
